Okay new blog. I haven't written one for a while but that might be because there strangely has not been enough happening in the music world that has made me come out of laziness for me to actually type one. However, here we are, something finally has.
I work behind the bar at a holiday park near Dumfries. Some of you may have heard of it or been there. Parkdean holiday park, Southerness. Now part of my contract states that I am not allowed to make any derogatory remarks of the park or company. I'm not. This has nothing to do with the park or company just people attitudes to music. Now at the bar, which is the show bar, they play music and have discos and karaoke and whatnot and they usually play chart music like; One Direction, JLS, Rihanna etc... You get my drift. Now as you may know, I hate that music but I have to tolerate it plus I never really have time to listen as I have customers to help get drunk out there minds with their kids by their side.
Then this week, must have been last Monday some metal heads where in and they asked 'Big G' at the computer if they had this one song. YES THEY DID. This one song was Iron Maiden Run to the Hills! I was very happy about this. And was amazed they even had it on the system. But a colleague of mine then said stuff like this should never be played here as it is a family venue, this guy mind doesn't like any music which actually involves guitars. That kinda got me angry. But then, it got me thinking; he's saying that a song that has meaning and in which the English in some cases is so good it's almost poetic is not suitable at this venue where as music which is only about love and actually promotes sex to young kids is okay. People wonder why kids are getting older so young and are having sex and kids at the age of 12 and sometimes lower this could be one reason why. You have a lot of Rihanna's songs which are only about sex and stuff, she has one called S&M for fucks sake how can you play that at a family venue. And the airplay on the radio doesn't help. You have One Direction fans who average out about 12 or something, who are also played on the radio near enough every day where the English in the song is really bad and then the song is about trying to get a girl, and it's always a different girl every song and some times doesn't even make sense. One song that gets played all the time at my work is from JLS, the lyrics in this song go like this and I quote; "she makes me wanna oh oh oh oh oh, she makes me wanna oh oh oh oh oh." What? How is that good English? And how does that even make sense? Unless you take it as she makes we want to have a fucking orgasm, which is definitely not suitable for their young fans. And now let me get to swearing. I admit I swear a lot. Quite a lot BUT in our songs, where Mik writes the lyrics, he vows never to have a swearword in any of our songs. He says there's no need. The strongest word he uses is "bastard". However, there is one song which could be misconstrued as having a number of swear words in it but it doesn't. Now, I'm rambling, back to my point. If a pop song that is aimed at kids has a number of swear words in it, how is that suitable for kids? It's not is it? And that exactly my point. A lot of the songs that are aimed at kids are not suitable for them, yet, the songs that we write and other bands that don't even involve screaming or aggressive vocals it is just singing, how is that not suitable?
Come up with your own conclusions if you want and I hope this has made you think about it. Now there is nothing that our measly small little un-powerful voices can do but we can hopefully make people see my point and agree with it.
